All states have a building code. It
sets the minimal standards required to build a building. It
covers almost every building component contained within a building. In
addition, there are numerous separate regulations that govern
plumbing, mechanical, electrical, elevators, accessibility, etc. All
of these regulations constitute what is referred to as the ‘building
code’. These codes change over time and become more
restrictive. These codes are written to protect human life
and safety. Only certain professionals, such as architects,
are licensed by the state to report on the building codes.
